Brazil : Race, Class, and Equity
Journal Entry #2 (June 14, 2016)
"The topic of affirmative action in Brazil and the United States has ignited a considerable debate in academia. As Professor Heringer had explained, Brazil has low enrollment numbers for its black student population with only 9.6% attending higher education. Lazaro's research also presented the economic inequalities between black and white. In fact, 14% of blacks are among the poorest, whereas whites only comprise 5% and for the richest population, the statistics are reversed. From the lectures, I see a direct correlation between race and socio-economic status. Although both categories are not mutually exclusive; they do coincide with each other to reinforce subordination of vulnerable populations."
